What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle yet powerful energy healing practice that supports balance within the body, mind, and spirit. Originating in Japan, Reiki works through the light placement of hands on or just above the body, allowing universal life energy to flow where it is most needed.

This process helps to calm the nervous system, release energetic blockages, and create space for deep relaxation and inner healing. At its core, Reiki is not about fixing, but about supporting the body’s natural ability to restore itself - gently and in its own time.

The Origins of Reiki

Reiki was founded by Mikao Usui (pronounced: me ka o u shu e) in the early 20th century, following a profound period of spiritual study, meditation, and self-discovery.

After undertaking a 21-day period of fasting, prayer, and meditation on Mount Kurama, Usui experienced a deep spiritual awakening. Through this, he gained insight into working with universal life force energy and began developing what we now know as Reiki.

He went on to share this practice with others, teaching that healing begins from within and is supported through presence, awareness, and compassion.

The Reiki Principles

At the heart of Reiki are simple yet powerful guiding principles:

Just for today…
Do not anger
Do not worry
Be grateful
Work diligently
Be kind to others

These principles offer a gentle way of living - bringing awareness, balance, and intention into everyday life.
